On September 28, 1987, a convenience stores owner, Robert Erhard Duff and his wife Susan Colleen gave birth to their daughter, Hilary Erhard Duff in Houston, Texas.
It was also in Houston that she grew up together with Haylie Duff who is her elder sister, also an actress, singer, and writer. Since from a very early age, the two girls got the encouragement of their mother to go into different art classes including ballet, acting, and singing. On her part, Colleen later went into the production of films and music videos.
With various local theatre opportunities coming her way, her mother decided to move Hillary and her sister to California in 1993 to afford them the opportunity to pursue their careers as entertainers.
